Volunteering
An invitation into a living, self-organising community built around connection, care, and shared responsibility.
Volunteering at Skeppsudden is not just about helping out. It is an invitation into a living, self-organising community and a place built around connection, care, and shared responsibility.
We are organised in a way inspired by what is often called a teal approach. This means we work with decentralised responsibility, a shared purpose, and space for people to show up as whole human beings. Volunteers are not treated as extra hands at the bottom of a hierarchy. Instead, to a radical extent, you step into a culture where initiative, communication, and mutual respect matter.
Our shared purpose is to create a paradise of connection. Connection to oneself, to others, and to something larger. As a volunteer, you become part of holding the physical space, the social atmosphere, and the quality of presence that make this possible.
In practice, volunteering includes a mix of practical contribution and participation in the life of the place. Many everyday responsibilities are organised through rotating roles that we call “hats.” A hat is a set of tasks connected to a specific area, such as kitchen support, food preparation, laundry, firewood, recycling, or caring for common spaces. Hats help distribute responsibility clearly and fairly, and they give everyone insight into how the whole place functions.
You are not expected to know everything when you arrive. You are expected to be willing to learn, ask questions, and take responsibility for your tasks. We value people who notice what is needed and act, rather than waiting to be managed. At the same time, support and guidance are always available. Volunteering here is a collaboration, not a test.

What you receive
As a volunteer, you are provided with accommodation on site and shared meals during your stay. Living together is part of the experience. Shared kitchens, common spaces, and daily rhythms create a sense of belonging and community.
You are also invited into the life of Skeppsudden beyond your tasks. Depending on the schedule and agreements for each event, volunteers often have the opportunity to join parts of professional retreats, workshops, and co-created events taking place on the land. This can include being present in sessions, shared rituals, creative activities, or community gatherings when your role allows.
This means that volunteering here is not only service, but also learning, connection, and personal experience. Many volunteers describe their time as a period of growth, inspiration, and deep human encounters.
How we work together
Because we work without a traditional hierarchy, communication is key. We encourage direct, respectful dialogue when something feels unclear or tense. We have regular check-ins and relational spaces where practical and interpersonal questions can be addressed early. This helps us keep the social atmosphere open and workable, even when things are intense or busy.
We also value wholeness. We recognise that volunteers are people with emotions, needs, and inner processes, not just workers. Space for rest, reflection, and simple human connection is part of the experience. At the same time, we hold clear agreements. Reliability, care for shared spaces, and consideration for others are essential. Freedom here goes together with responsibility.
In short, volunteering at Skeppsudden means becoming part of a living system. You contribute to the practical functioning of the place, and you are also invited into a culture of presence, growth, and shared care.
